Sis Bye! Tinashe Blames Colorism for Her Lack of Success

"There are hundreds of [male] rappers that all look the same, that sound the same, but if you’re a black woman, you’re either Beyoncé or Rihanna. It’s very, very strange.” - Tinashe

That's exactly how I felt when I read about Tinashe interview with the Guardian. However, this one had more of an old school southern Black man accent behind it.

In her interview Tinashe highlighted the struggles of being a singer in the music industry, her struggling success, lack of support with the Black community and sharing the limelight with Beyoncé and Rihanna. Oh, and sis also brought up how colorism has worked against her in achieving the success she desires. As the guardian reports:

Tinashe’s mixed-race heritage, which was used “as another example of why I was different” during those difficult school years, also remains an issue. “There’s colorism involved in the black community, which is very apparent,” she says carefully. “It’s about trying to find a balance where I’m a mixed woman, and sometimes I feel like I don’t fully fit into the black community; they don’t fully accept me, even though I see myself as a black woman. That disconnect is confusing sometimes.” A shrug. “I am what I am.”

On Beyoncé and Rihanna the guardian notes:

"She is also calling bullshit on the idea, perpetuated recently by warring Twitter fan-tribes, that there’s only room for a couple of successful black female artists at any given time. “Recently, my cousin was with a friend of a friend, who was in high school, and she was like: ‘I’m a fan of Kehlani,’ but in a way that was like, ‘So I can’t be a fan of Tinashe, too.’ Then my friend posed the question, ‘Why not be a fan of both?’ It’s kind of like sport; people feel like they have to pick a side.” Suddenly she springs forward, her default laid-back demeanour temporarily out of the window. “There are hundreds of [male] rappers that all look the same, that sound the same, but if you’re a black woman, you’re either Beyoncé or Rihanna. It’s very, very strange.”

After reading this all I could do was clutch my pearls because Tinashe really pulled the colorism card and I'm really confused. First of Tinashe is mixedher mother is Danish and her father Zimbabwean. As a light-skinned Black woman in the music industry, that alone offers her some privileges that her peers especially those who are dark skin don't have. Let's not act like I have to explain this deeper. Yes, she may have experienced some bullying in her past, and I am in no way shape or form trying to invalid her experiences, but she know DAMN WELL colorism is not the reason why she's a struggling artist.

Next, I think everyone is well aware that Bey and Ri Ri are running the game right now! It doesn't mean Tinashe can't get a piece of the pie or has to walk the same lane as these women to be successful. This is a lesson that goes for everyone, myself included:

"If we want to become successful in any feat we have to eat, breathe and sleep that industry". - Charli

Sometimes I wish I would take my own advice.

Anywho my next point is, it's not that Tinashe is an unsuccessful artist she just has to pitch her audience. I may not be a fan of her, however it's not everyday people have 3,000,000+ Youtube views and a song on the radio. Success takes time, it is not a short journey. She has to find her voice, learn her market and know that just like in her song 2 On she's got to give it all that she's got NOW in order to get where she wants to go.

Don't blame the Black community, or "colorism". As a youngin don't compare yourself to Bey or RiRi, because these women put in their time and energy to get where they are. If you want it work harder and go so hard NO ONE CAN IGNORE YOUR HUSTLE.

I honestly don't have the time....

I hope she can put her insecurities aside and stick it out. She's got a lot of personal work and explaining to do because Black folks looking like:
