How To Manage Being Broke

Happy new year to you all! The new year is an important time to start fresh and obtain all that we desire.

Although I like to think that we can start over at any given time of the year we choose, it’s important to acknowledge that nevertheless it’s a new start. And so this post is dedicated to getting our finances on track for the new year and how to manage being broke in Brokeland.

You are broke not broken, so let that sink in for a moment!

For anyone who has ever gone somewhere in life-who did not have a silver spoon in their mouth you can almost bet once upon of time they were broke.

You may have heard some people say:

...Cause a n*gga straight suffering from a lack of having paper - CPO

Money ain't a thing if I got it- Joey Badass

Blind to Broke Man’s dream- 2Pac

How much a dolla really cost?- Kendrick Lamar

A n*gga never been as broke as me- Notorious B.I.G

Whatever your stage in Brokeland I can bet there is a quote that speaks to your Brokeass experiences.

Like most of us people in Brokeland we have to learn how to manage being broke, the present struggle and the way out of it. If you haven’t read Let's Talk About The Traumatic Experiences Of Being Broke , 20 Familiar Struggles Only Broke Folks Will Understand and Young, Dumb & Broke: 12 Common Behaviors Of Broke People go read these posts then come back!

Great. Now that you’ve have returned I need you to understand the one thing we didn’t get a chance to talk about. It's surrounds the mentality and thought process of being broke. You are the thoughts you have, in other words you are the thoughts that exist in your mind. If you allow negative thoughts to consume you, then you will become a negative ball of energy.

The same ideas consists in the thought process we have in being Broke and how we talk about our financial woes and struggles.

So, how do you talk about Brokeness?

Is it a mentality? Is it a systemic issue? Is it a mismanagement of funds? A couple of bad mistakes?

Do you find yourself constantly chasing empty bags? Do you consistently measure your worth by your pockets?

Shoot, life in Brokeland can be a combination of all or few in between.

What’s realistic though is you should stop talking about it especially if it's becoming a hindrance to your health and personal well being.

Our worth as people is not determined by what’s in our wallets, even if money makes the world go around!

If you can’t “live life” because you’re stressed and strapped for cash remember these words by Donny Hathaway (Yes, I'm bringing Donny Hathaway into the new year):

Everything has got to get better just as soon as you make up your mind!

It’s easier said than done but the switch can be turned on. That switch starts with learning how to manage your ish better.

In the course of you making up your mind, you will be able to free yourself of the negative thoughts and discussions that may be allowing you to match your life worth to what's in your bank account .

I’m not asking you to normalize poverty or to be complacent.

I’m telling you being broke can be a small portion of your life. I always say Brokeness does not have to be a permanent state of being.

The world is a cruel place and it ain’t gonna change but you have the control over your thoughts and how they shape your time in Brokeland.

If this means telling yourself, declaring and believing that you can press through and you use this time to manage being broke better than do it. It’s the new year and the least you can do is ensure your finances are progressing into the newyear.

So, maybe one of these things can help:

1. Don’t spend money you don’t have!
2. Don’t spend money you need to save!
3. Find a way to create passive income.
What’s your interest? For example is it in arts? How can you make money from it?
4. CREATE A DAMN BUDGET AND STOP USING BROKE LANGUAGE
"I just don’t have it"! Well, maybe you could if you found some extra wiggle room in your
Income a.k.a budget!
5. KNOW THAT YOU CAN SLAY BEING BROKE AND THE WORLD DOESN’T HAVE TO KNOW
Let’s just call it living #BROKEBLACKBOUGIE
6. READ SOME DAMN BOOKS TO GIVE YOU A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE ABOUT MONEY
Maybe start with How Rich People Think By Steve Siebold. Siebold is a self-made millionaire!
7. Know that the world will keep spinning no matter your situation and you can change your dynamics.
 8. Create a budget! Create a budget! Create a budget!
       Can’t emphasize this enough!
9.  STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS ESPECIALLY ON SOCIAL MEDIA:
One of my favorite finance bloggers @thefiguremaker made a post last year about how Instagram is all smoke and mirrors! We all see posts with people travelling and with people truly flexing for the gram! So, don’t let the flex discourage you.
10. GET ON YOUR BULLY! REALIZE WE DON’T HAVE TO CLAIM PERMANENT RESIDENCE IN BROKELAND. WE LEARN, WE GROW AND MOVE OUT.

Simply put more actions than words into how you want to shape your future.

I hope as you have finished reading this you know I write from my experiences and present journey. Sometimes, I have to talk to myself and write a post putting the energy out there I need to live in. This is what it is all about! I know dammmmmmmmmn wellllllllllll #MARTINVOICE someone else can use this too.

  3. Stop using broke language is SO KEY! My pastor used to say that all that time! I've started saying 'I'm not broke, I'm temporarily in between funds', or 'my millions just haven't been deposited yet'. Love you blog! Thanks for sharing
